Cannot disable flycheck

The README says:

[to] Turn off flycheck.

(remove-hook 'rustic-mode-hook 'flycheck-mode)

However, after adding this to the package initialisation, flycheck is still started with a rustic buffer.

I tried to setq the entire hook for one that calls flymake instead. It then does start flymake, but flycheck still starts anyway. Adding (lambda nil (flycheck-mode -1)) to the hook does not help (though eval'ing this a posteriori does disable flycheck).

I did not add flycheck myself to any hooks, custom vars, or init files. I couldn't find flycheck-mode in any obvious minor mode like lsp, and it's not in rust-mode-hook either.
