Hovering the mouse pointer over the profile switch buttons displays:
Name
Optional profile description
Connection status

On Android the profile selector displays:
Name
Mail address

The desktop client does not display a mail address. This makes profile switching difficult to me, since my two profiles have identical names.

I don't think we ever displayed addresses there, see git log -S"addr" -- packages/frontend/src/components/AccountListSidebar/AccountHoverInfo.tsx.

I agree though that we should, at least for non-Chatmail addresses.

As a workaround, you can use the "profile labels" feature.

chatmail adresses are random and showing them prominently in ui raises the incentive to give them to others to contact you. however, this does not work, resulting in bad ux, and lowering the chance ppl find the "correct" way to get in contact

therefore, we tune down chatmail adresses a lot, to not confuse ppl with "email" (most ppl using deltachat are probably not even aware of using email infrastructure)

classic adresses could be shown, but this is not a high prio, not even sure it is a good idea: might look like a bug, or confuse user, if only some profile show address

most users do not have tons of profiles, let alone classic profiles - so the "profile label" is a good alternative (and could be preset to adress for classic profiles) - and if you learn that, you've learnt sth working for the chatmail profiles as well :)

I do not see a real problem here. Just display either
Email: xxxx@yyyy.zzz
or
Chatmail: xxxx@yyyy.zzz

displaying an email address that cannot be used as such by classic email programs is a huge ux issue.

it is in the nature of delta chat to avoid outsourcing such questions to the user. not requiring deep understanding. other apps may do differently :)

this is not only theory, tho obvious already there.

there is a real problem in practise, we got lots of feedback, therefore we know it is a bad idea. the decision not to display chatmail adresses prominently, however, is also easy, as they are just not needed - and not displaying will make other ways to get in contact easier discoverable.

this is about chatmail mainly. for classic email adresses - not totally sure yet, see above

i just checked:

• android displays classic addresses unless there is a profile label
• ios and desktop do not display classic addresses

maybe indeed, for classic email, it is a good idea to prefill profile label with address from core, cc @adbenitez ? then no UI needs to care about that side-topic any longer, the profile label is already displayed where needed.

for desktop, for now, until resoloved there is no actionable item; moving this issue to interface repo, as it affects other stuff as well
